In an attempt to reduce medicines wastage, patients will now be required to order their repeat prescriptions directly with their GP practice, with effect from their next repeat prescription order.
Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Clinical Commissioning Group are advising patients through their GP practice and local pharmacies about changes that have been made to how repeat prescriptions are ordered.
Medicines wastage occurs for a number of reasons, of which we have found one of the main causes being the over-ordering of repeat prescriptions. We are committed to reducing this waste and are now asking for patients across our communities to support us in reducing the amount of waste we produce.
We are asking patients and their carers across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough to only order repeat prescriptions directly from their GP practices when they need it.
From 1st April 2018 we will be asking patients, to order repeat prescriptions directly from their GP practice rather than via automated services offered through pharmacies. Patients who require additional support to manage their medicines will have this provided by their GP practice or community pharmacies.
Patients can order repeat prescriptions directly from their GP practice through online ordering, in person, by telephone or by post depending on the GP practice.
As well as reducing waste, ordering repeat prescriptions through GP practices reduces the chance of items being ordered that are no longer required or in too large quantities than are actually used. Unused medicines cannot be recycled or reused even if patients return them to the pharmacies.
We want to make sure these changes are applied gradually to ensure that we can identify and support those patients that need help and support to manage their medication. To support us in implementing the new ordering process patients will have until 31st March 2018 to discuss the changes with their GP practice after which time they will be unable to order repeat prescriptions through any other means.”
If patients have enquiries about their medication they are advised to speak to their GP practice, for all other queries they can call Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Commissioning Group on: 01223 725400 and speak to the Enquiries team or email email@example.com
